Yoga & Tai Chi

Tucked inside The Front Climbing Club at the core of the restored 1925 American Can Company building, the YogaLoft is a simple, welcoming space where breath and movement come together for each of us in our own way. Our yoga classes recognize the yogi inside the athlete, the mom, the nine-to-fiver, the college student—anyone who’s ready to move toward balance in their life. It’s our strong belief that your yoga is as unique as you are. It’s your practice.

Yoga and tai chi are included in your Front membership. If you’re not yet a member and would like to try out a class, your first one is on us!

We provide unique classes and care about our practitioners. Our classes offer a non-competitive environment that is conducive to learning and expanding one’s ability. All classes are held in our wood-floored studio. Our yoga shalas have air purifiers and a great ventilation system which is always running. Participants have full access to our locker rooms, showers, climbing and to our weight and aerobic equipment.

Breath and Body Flow
Take a deep dive into the intricate connection between breath, movement, and awareness. No music, no expectations, just you, your practice and the movement of your breath.

Half Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga Yoga is a science and a practice that has evolved over thousands of years. Led together as a group, this is 1/2 primary series, slowed down a bit. We will also work on refining understanding of the foundational aspects of the asanas (body postures) and vinyasas (specific ways of moving between asanas). We may spend extra time learning specific guidelines to the practice and going over fundamentals such as proper alignment, jumping through and jumping back, chakrasana (backward somersault), learning how to headstand, etc. This class is open to all levels.

Intro to Tai Chi
Tai chi is extremely popular around the world, especially in Asia, and for good reason: it’s an internal art that’s reflected outwardly through smooth, peaceful patterns of movement and alignment. We believe everyone can benefit greatly from this ancient, mysterious practice. Tai chi helps promote health, injury recovery, balance, stress relief, strength, and groundedness. Our experienced instructor James Shook has been teaching tai chi since 2012 and practicing tai chi since 2002. He founded the great Salt Lake Tai Chi China society in Utah and Resolution Tai Chi in Oregon. This class will give you all the tools you need to practice tai chi in the way that’s most beneficial for you!

Intro to Yoga
New to yoga or need a refresher? Come experience all the mental and physical benefits of this ancient practice. A consistent yoga practice will help you find more inner peace, focus, calmness, strength, flexibility and agility of body and mind, and so much more! All bodies can benefit from yoga, and we welcome everyone! All you need is a mat, some clothes that stretch, and the willingness to show up as you are and give it a try! In this class, you will experience all six movements of the spine, holding some simple postures (asanas) sequenced in a body-intelligent way with warm up and cool down, along with some easy breathing and mind calming techniques. We hope to help you fall in love with yoga as much as we have!

Kick Your Asana
Speed up your heart rate, slow down your mind. Kick Your Asana is a journey focused on the space between the postures- or the transitions between the asana, creating a nonstop flow of energy and movement through the use of breath and technique.

Meditation & Movement: Qigong
Meditation brings us into the present, reduces stress, and increases self-awareness, patience and tolerance. Join James S. for an hour of meditation and Qigong. to help get you centered and grounded. Start off with guided meditation, then move into slow, meditative standing movements that are linked to the breath. These exercises have been used for centuries to cultivate good mental and physical health by developing a clearer mind and a more relaxed body. This training will help to improve range of motion, balance, and muscular efficiency. It can be a valuable supplemental training for any athlete, as well as an effective tool for injury rehabilitation.

Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga*
The full Primary series of the Ashtanga system taught in the tradition of Sri T. Krishnamacharya of Mysore, India and led together as a group. This intelligently sequenced practice involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of sun salutations and postures. We practice a full range of asanas after warming up with sun salutations, concluding with backbends, inversions, a short sitting and breathing practice and a relaxing rest to ground and assimilate. The teacher calls out the asana names & vinyasa counts in Sanskrit and counts each breath to encourage a seamless, meditative, guided flow.
*This class does not meet on moon days.

I started attending half Primary series classes at The Front in Ogden in 2019. I quickly became obsessed, and I’ve been slowly working towards full Primary series ever since. Supta Kurmasana has been taking a lot of time and patience but I’m here for the ride. I truly love the Primary series of Ashtanga and I know I’m only at the tip of the iceberg.

I completed my first 200 hour yoga teacher training from the Yoga Loft last Fall in 2022. I’m grateful for my many wise, dedicated, supportive, intuitive teachers. Their shared love and knowledge of yoga has been an inspiration. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to learn from them, during my teacher training and still today in my current practice.

I’m excited to share my love and curiosity for yoga with our community in Ogden. Come take a class with me, or from me!

A few non-yoga things about me:

I work as a Respiratory Therapist primarily in the Newborn ICU.

I grew up just outside of Denver and moved to Utah in 2013 for school and easy access to the mountains.

I am married to my wonderfully witty guy, Alex, who makes me a kinder and funnier person. We have two dogs, Charlie and Theo, who are equally handsome and personable.

Caitlin D.

Caitlin received her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in Truckee, CA in 2018. Since then she has focused on trauma-informed yoga- completing a training in San Francisco. Continuing with her own personal study, she is currently receiving her 300-hour Yoga Teacher Training right here at YogaLoft in Ogden, UT. Caitlin believes yoga is an extremely powerful tool for self-regulation. Whatever the class may be; from Vinyasa to Restorative the goal of her classes is to promote and practice self-regulation: cultivating a sense of safety, groundedness, and presence in the body. Her classes will be a combination of movement, mindfulness practices/mind-body connection awareness, and breathwork. Caitlin is originally from Vermont and moved to Ogden in July 2023. Yoga aside, you can find Caitlin cooking in the kitchen, planning her next adventure, eating dark chocolate, or just being cozy!

My passion for yoga can be traced back to my days as an infant laying on my back, feet in the air, I was a happy baby. I've been on this path from the moment I could bite my own toenails (YUCK) to the day I held my first handstand. The reason? I love movement, mindfulness and memories. I'm excited to share what I love with others. My hope is to make an impact in the quality of people's lives with my small contribution.

When I'm not doing asana/poses of animals and sages, you can find me playing with my grandbabies, quilting, hiking, skiing and engaging in stimulating conversations. I live the sweaty life, and look forward to sharing my love of yoga with you.

“I found yoga (or, maybe, it found me) 19 years ago. My body and mind were SO rigid and tight that I couldn’t even touch my toes! But, consistent yoga practice encourages both mental and physical flexibility. The practice continually pushed me out of my comfort zone. And, that is why I fell in LOVE with it! There is always something to learn. There is always room to grow, and change! FYI, the inability to touch my toes is no longer an issue 🙂
Evolution and progress are forever a part of life and individualism. So, I left my previous career of secondary music education (high school choir director) and decided to share something else I love: Yoga. Through my years of yoga instructing, I have logged well over 11,000 teaching hours. And, did I mention, I LOVE it!
I am always grateful for the many trainings, teachers and loved ones who have inspired, guided and taught me over the years. Love and thanks to John, my amazing husband! His support makes my practicing/teaching possible. Gratitude and props to Jeff Silverstein, for opening the Ashtanga door and inviting me in. And, many thanks to David Swenson, Maggie Odette, Sammy Brown, Kino MacGregor and Tim Feldmann for always challenging me and steadying me along my yoga path.”

Sylvia attended her yoga class at the urging of her husband about 15 years ago. She reluctantly took him up on it because someone said it would help her hip injuries from running--and it did! And in the process, she fell in love with yoga. In 2018, she did her 200-hr RYT here at the Front and is now completing her 300-hr certification. She can't wait to share yin and its many benefits--with the bonus of a sound bath! "I consider it an absolute privilege to work with the amazing teachers and students at the Front!!" When she's not teaching yoga, she enjoys hiking, skiing, playing pickleball, reading, and hanging out with her hubby, kids, grandkids, and two dogs.

Rebecca H.

Rebecca H.

Yoga found Rebecca in 2017 in a small city in Texas. When she took her first class, she found a part of herself that she didn’t know existed in the movement and breath of the practice. From there she has used yoga as a daily tool to help increase her understanding of the human body, the power of breath, and the ability movement has to heal trauma.

She sought training and completed her 200 YTT in 2018, studying under Kathi Needham who emphasized Ashtanga - Primary Series, Vinyasa Flow, and pranayama. After a year of teaching, Rebecca pursued a 300 IAYT training at InBody Academy, where she studied under Aron Stein, Guruprasad Singh, Sammy Brown, Christy Burnette, & Dana Levy. This training provided an emphasis on the healing nature of yoga in terms of recovering from severe trauma, addiction, and physical dysfunction. It also introduced Kundalini into Rebecca’s personal practice where she learned that breath and core mobility go hand-in-hand, and thus can start the healing process.

Rebecca intends to share this beautiful practice and all it has to offer for the rest of her life.

Tawna W.

Tawna W.

Tawna found yoga as a dancer and climber. She earned her 200-hour RYT from YogaLoft in 2014. She infuses her modern dance background into her flows- they can feel like choreography. Her own practice has evolved through navigating injuries and becoming a mom.

She’s enjoyed teaching yoga as a high school teacher and at The Front YogaLoft. As a certified mental heath counselor she has integrated yoga and other mind/body practices for kids and teens at Primary Children’s Hospital, folks in substance abuse rehab, and for people recovering from eating disorders.

When Tawna is not teaching or practicing yoga you can find her playing the cello, choreographing various dance projects, dancing or hanging out with her little fam at the bouldering wall.
