Core Training: Off the Wall with Joy

Joy Black // Strength Coach

Understand it. Identify what you need. Train it.

  • Understand your core: Learn how your core functions on the wall and why traditional ab exercises may or may not be what your climbing needs.
  • Strength vs. endurance: Understand the difference, why both matter for climbing, and how to train each effectively.
  • Train with intention: Learn practical exercises and progressions to develop core strength, endurance, and control.

Core Application: On the Wall with Jenya

Find it. Use it. Feel the difference.

  • Creating tension: Learn how to recognize, create, and apply body tension, especially on steep walls.
  • Footwork and engagement: Explore how precise foot placement and active engagement help you maintain contact with the wall through challenging moves.
  • Transferring force: Learn how to connect your upper and lower body, engage your feet, and move with greater control and efficiency.

Who This Is For

  • Climbers who do core work but don’t feel it on the wall
  • Climbers who lose tension or feel their feet cut loose on steep terrain
  • Newer climbers who want a clear place to start with core training
  • Experienced climbers who want to refine how they use their core on harder climbing
  • Anyone who wants to move with more control and efficiency

All climbing levels welcome. Exercises and climbing drills can be modified to meet you where you are.

What You’ll Take Away

You’ll leave with a better understanding of what your core needs, practical exercises you can add to your training, and hands-on experience applying that strength to climbing movement.
