The Front offers the most extensive Ashtanga Yoga program in Utah! We are the only yoga shala (school) in Utah authorized by R. Sharath Jois of Mysore, India, the current head teacher or “guru” of Ashtanga Yoga. Our authorized Ashtanga teachers, Samuel Brown and Sarah Jane Burkholz have had many years of study under his tutelage and all of our Ashtanga teachers have had many years of practice under authorized teachers, through which this valuable practice was passed down with respect and love.

Ashtanga Yoga is a science and a practice that has evolved over thousands of years. The discipline has 6 sequences, each with around 30 different sitting asanas (postures). All sequences start with Surya Namaskars (sun salutations) and the same core standing asanas. Each sequence ends with backbends and the same finishing series of asanas. The first sequence, the Primary Series, can be a lifetime of practice and is called “Yoga Chikitsa” or body therapy. Yoga Chikitsa has many forward folding postures, hip openers and jumps. The forward folding postures encourage lengthening of the hamstrings and contraction of the front side of the body, conditioning the inner organs and making the lower back more secure and supple. Patience and time are required to familiarize the body and mind with this practice and it may take many years to learn completely.

Benefits of Ashtanga

Vinyasa means breathing and movement system. For each movement, there is one breath. For example, in Surya Namskar there are nine vinyasas. The first vinyasa is inhaling while raising your arms over your head and putting your hands together; the second is exhaling while bending forward, placing your hands next to your feet, etc. In this way all asanas are assigned a certain number of vinyasas.

The purpose of vinyasa is for internal cleansing. Breathing and moving together while performing asanas makes the blood hot, or as Pattabhi Jois says, boils the blood. Thick blood is dirty and causes disease in the body. The heat created from yoga cleans the blood and makes it thin, so that it may circulate freely. The combination of the asanas with movement and breath make the blood circulate freely around all the joints, taking away body pains. When there is a lack of circulation, pain occurs. The heated blood also moves through all the internal organs removing impurities and disease, which are brought out of the body by the sweat that occurs during practice.

Sweat is an important byproduct of vinyasa, because it is only through sweat that disease leaves the body and purification occurs. In the same way that gold is melted in a pot to remove its impurities, by the virtue of the dirt rising to the surface as the gold boils, and the dirt then being removed, yoga boils the blood and brings all our toxins to the surface, which are removed through sweat. If the method of vinyasa is followed, the body becomes healthy and strong, and pure like gold.

After the body is purified, it is possible to purify the nervous system and then the sense organs. These first steps are very difficult and require many years of practice. The sense organs are always looking outside and the body is always giving into laziness. However, through determination and diligent practice, these can be controlled. After this is accomplished, mind control comes automatically. Vinyasa creates the foundation for this to occur.

Ashtanga Terms

Tristhana: This means the three places of attention or action: posture, breathing system and looking place. These three are very important for yoga practice and cover three levels of purification: the body, nervous system and mind. They are always performed in conjunction with each other.

Asanas purify, strengthen and give flexibility to the body.

Breathing is rechaka- inhale and puraka- exhale. Both the inhale and exhale should be steady and even, the length of the inhale should be the same length and strength as the exhale. Breathing in this manner purifies the nervous system.

Dristhi is the place where you look while in the asana. There are nine dristhis: the nose, between the eyebrows, navel, thumb, hands, feet, up, right side and left side. Dristhi purifies and stabilizes the functioning of the mind.

For cleaning the body internally two factors are necessary: air and fire. The place of fire in our bodies is four inches below the navel. This is the standing place of our life force. In order for fire to burn, air is necessary, hence the necessity of the breath. If you stoke a fire with a blower, evenness is required so that the flame is not smothered out, or blown out of control.

The same method stands for the breath. Long even breaths will strengthen our internal fire, increasing heat in the body which in turn heats the blood for physical purification, and burns away impurities in the nervous system as well. Long even breathing increases the internal fire and strengthens the nervous system in a controlled manner and at an even pace. When this fire is strengthened, our digestion, health and life span all increase. Uneven inhalation and exhalation, or breathing too rapidly, will imbalance the beating of the heart, throwing off both the physical body and autonomic nervous system.

An important component of the breathing system is mula and uddiyana bandha. These are the anal and lower abdominal locks which seal in energy, give lightness, strength and health to the body, and help to build a strong internal fire. Without bandhas, breathing will not be correct, and the asanas will give no benefit. When mula bandha is perfect, mind control is automatic.

In Ashtanga yoga tradition both full and new moon days are observed holidays from the practice. The moon’s relative position to the sun is seen to create strong energetic experiences and patterns in our bodies and minds. Feel free to come in and use our space to do a gentle self-practice on moon days.

I have been a student of yoga for more than twenty-five years and teaching since 2015. In fact, finding a teaching home at The Front feels fitting since I discovered yoga in college when rock climbing dominated my free time. As I continued on to law school and a legal career in New York, I prioritized yoga to unwind my body after long hours hunched at a desk. After a cancer diagnoses in 2011, I felt betrayed by my body and disconnected from the person I thought I was. This shifted my practice from a physical, stress-relieving pursuit to an inward journey of healing and self-acceptance. As my practice slowed to focus on the breath, I learned to work with, rather than against, my perceived failures and limitations.

My classes start with the breath, guiding students through alignment-focused sequences tied to the rhythm of the seasons. I offer philosophical guidance as well as practical tools to help soothe the nervous system and counter the overstimulation, anxiety and stress that tends to dominate our modern world. Each time I step onto my mat, I endeavor to meet myself as I am – strong or weak, energized or dragging, steady or unbalanced. I invite my students to do the same as we engage in a cooperative dialogue while exploring a playful and supportive practice to build strength, flexibility and balance in the body and mind.

Off the mat, I can be found coddiwompling through the desert with my partner and our dogs, laughing with friends, reading at least three books and slowly writing one of my own. My greatest writing accomplishment to date is clearly not crafting this bio but running the Femme Fictionale writing group.

Brian

Brian Forman

Brian Forman discovered the benefits of yoga during a rock bottom in 2014. Since then, he has continued to deepen his practice by regularly studying with his primary teachers, Mary Taylor and Richard Freeman. In 2016, Brian’s curiosity led him to Mysore, India, where he focused his studies in ashtanga vinyasa yoga with Sharath Jois. Shortly after completing the Front’s Teacher Training in 2017, Brian began teaching regular yoga classes at The Front.

Brian weaves elements of ashtanga vinyasa yoga, mindfulness, and contemplative practice into his offerings at the Front. He believes practicing yoga should be both seriously playful and playfully serious. His intention and hope for his offerings is that the benefits of the practice trickle into all areas of one’s life, and that yoga is a vehicle to living more authentically.

Off the mat, Brian is a psychedelic integration guide and astrologer. He enjoys reading, learning, hiking, and exploring new places.

Elle

Elle J.

Hello, I'm Elle!

I completed my 300-hour yoga teacher training through The Front, learning about a wide range of topics from anatomy to the more subtle energetics of yoga. I danced for Ballet West for a large portion of my life. After wrecking my joints, I found a passion for yoga as a form of healing and building strength. I love the flowy nature of vinyasa and the structure of Ashtanga, and often blend the two in my classes. Currently I'm a student, working towards (eventually) studying in the medical field. I have a green thumb with way too many plants and enjoy being in nature! I'm beyond grateful to be teaching yoga at The Front, and excited for all the wonderful experienced I'll have along the way!

James DuPont

James hails from the Tetons and has lived in the Wasatch range off and on for several years. His yoga journey began when he took a “Yoga for Wellness” course from Nina Vought while attending Westminster College. Since then, he has completed a 100-hour Vinyasa training with Nikki Sue Miller at Inversion Yoga in Jackson, Wyoming and his RYT-200 in 2020 at the Front with Sarah Jane, Steph Nally, and Sammy Brown. James primarily practices the 26.2 series, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga. In his classes, James builds a strong connection with breath and movement in his flows. James believes that the benefits of yoga come when breath and movement are in sync. He hopes that all who attend his class can experience this connection.

When he’s not teaching you can find James skiing, biking, camping, or off hiking with bud pups.

Kavita

I grew up in southern India, where yoga was a natural part of life. My journey with yoga started early, watching my grandfather perform surya namaskars, my mother balance upside down on her head, and my grandmother share her wisdom on Virushha Aaharam (incompatible food pairings).

Yoga became a means for me to heal my body and complement my martial arts practice. I began with Hatha yoga and gradually explored the depth of Ashtanga yoga, finding a balance between strength and mindfulness. Over the years, I've deepened my knowledge of yoga and its philosophy by learning from teachers both in India and across the world, in both Hatha and Ashtanga yoga.

I am also a certified Pranayama teacher, in addition to being an Asana teacher. For the past eight years, I've been fortunate to teach in Utah, sharing my love for yoga with the local community. My classes include Vinyasa, Hatha, and soft flow, and I strive to create a supportive environment where everyone can deepen their practice.

I am honored to guide others on their yoga journey, and I look forward to practicing together.

Thi N.

I found yoga in graduate school after I stopped dancing & performing, which were my main outlets for self-inquiry, expression, and creativity. I felt lost & started practicing vinyasa three-four times a week to help me reconnect with my body. It turned out yoga is so much more than the poses. If dance is an expression, yoga is an absorption—taking in the essence of life. In the past few years, yoga & meditation have offered me a space to discover, connect, and love myself authentically. I feel more at ease living in harmony and alignment with the changing nature of who I am and my environment. Recently, I've also learned that we won't find what we're looking for in yoga because it's already there.

I'm incredibly grateful to study with amazing teachers at the Front YTT program and my teachers' teachers, and humbled to share this beautiful practice with fellow yogis. my guilty pleasures include sitting with a good cup of coffee for an hour or two and doing nothing.

Madi Young

Madi has been teaching yoga since 2017. While her personal practice is rooted in the Ashtanga Yoga method, she sees value in teaching many different styles of yoga including Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Vinyasa Yoga. Yoga has brought her both peace and healing which is why she finds joy in teaching others so that they may experience the benefits of yoga in their own life.

Robyn

Robyn

Robyn’s yoga journey began in 2017 when she sought a gentle form of exercise before and after her hospital night shifts as a Registered Nurse. Over time, yoga became more than just a physical exercise-it became a pathway to a deeper understanding of her multifaceted self. Through dedication to her practice, Robyn gradually discovered the profound teachings of yoga philosophy. Learning how to integrate these practices into her daily life continues to help her cultivate greater physical, mental, and energetic flexibility both on and off the mat.

Robyn’s commitment to yoga as a life-long student led her to complete her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2024 and she is now pursuing her 300-hour certification.

Her intention as a yoga instructor is to awaken, open, and uplift both the physical and subtle body by helping students to deepen their inner connection and empowering them to walk through life in divine alignment with a sense of purpose.

Robyn remains devoted to her sadhana (daily practice) and enjoys spending her free time exploring her outdoor hobbies or unwinding at home with her husband and 2 small dogs in SLC.

Steph Nally

Steph discovered yoga through her first guru (her mom) at the age of 14 and feels fortunate to have spent her formative teenage years learning about embodiment and chanting with her family. The practice captured her attention further while attending university and looking for a tool to help her navigate the stress and exertion of that time, and she completed her first 200-hr teacher training in 2012. Since then, Steph has taken every opportunity available to deepen her understanding of this ancient practice. She’s traveled to India twice to immerse herself in traditional training and practices with Kia Miller, and is honored to be considered one of Kia’s senior teachers. Steph has also been fortunate enough to travel throughout the U.S. to study with established ashtanga vinyasa teachers such as Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor. She is grateful to her teachers for providing the example of practicing what you teach, and has had a dedicated sadhana practice since 2016.

Steph has a degree in Exercise + Sport Science with a Nutrition Minor, and has studied and been influenced by Ashtanga, Hatha, Tantra, Himalayan, and Kundalini schools. Her approach to yoga is playful yet grounded, and her intention is to connect you with your breath, alignment, and the more subtle aspects of yourself. Her classes are accessible to all levels and often incorporate arm balances and inversions, mantra, and meditation. Steph currently leads immersive retreats and programs around the world and online that provide the opportunity to dive deeply into traditional practices, recalibrate your nervous system, and establish balancing rituals that deepen a sense of peace and joy.
