Citizens Climbing: The Not-So-Scary Guide to Competing

Beaster is coming, and while that bunny might be scary, competing doesn’t have to be. Climbing competitions at The Front invite athletes of all levels to get on the wall and give it their best shot. With categories for Yellow Dot climbers all the way up to Olympic Pros, we’ve got climbs and camaraderie ready for you. Read on for what to expect at this comp and beyond, plus tips to make your next comp the best one yet!

Type of Competition

Beaster is a Modified Redpoint Ropes Competition. Here’s what that means:

Ropes Competition: You can top rope or lead to score points.

Redpoint: You try climbs over a set period and earn points when you reach the top.

Modified: With some additions and changes to make the competition more fun.

The modifications we’ve made for Beaster let you score more points, and include:

Zones: You don’t just get points at the top—you earn points for reaching benchmarks along the way.

Bonuses: Flash a climb (reach the top on your first try) for a 100 point bonus, and earn 30% more points when you lead rather than top rope.

Multi-Day Format: Climb April 13th – 16th to get points on the board. Plenty of time to project!

Categories

We’ve got tons of category differentiation to give you the best shot at taking home a custom-poured trophy from Proxy Climbing. Sign up for the category that fits you best:

  • Men’s, Women’s, or Non-Binary
  • Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, or Expert
  • Masters for crushers 40 and up
  • Pro for the pros

The top 5 finishers from each Citizens category will be invited to Citizens Finals on April 17th. The top 8 from Pro Qualifiers will follow, putting on the biggest show in the valley after our Citizens take their podiums. Expect a killer MC, food and drinks, and a DJ to turn this showdown into a certified party.

Scoring

The Front tracks competition scoring through Pebble Climbing. No paper, and no flagging down judges—just you logging climbs the way you would any other session, except this time there are points on the line. You can check your spot on the leaderboard throughout the competition and come back day after day to move up the standings.

Pebble Climbing is on the Apple and Android app stores and just requires a login and event registration to compete.

Competition Beta

Whether it’s your first comp or your fiftieth, the best approach to have a great time is to treat it like any other climbing session. Really, standard preparation is enough. No need to overthink it!

Eat and Drink: Carb up, get hydrated, and make sure your body is fueled for endurance. Climbing is no joke, and leading on an empty stomach never did anyone any good. A Honey Stinger Waffle is a solid pre-climb option, but whatever tried-and-true carb works for you will do the trick.

Warm Up: Get into your groove. We like to use resistance bands to warm up the arms, light cardio to get the blood pumping, and even take on some yoga poses to get warm and primed for the wall.

Climb: Easy as that, all you need to be a competitor is the willingness to get on the wall and try. Come one, come all.

Finals

The reason we love competitions is Finals. A full week of climbing is a pretty solid part of the Beaster experience on its own, but the energy of Finals is hard to match. This year we’re introducing Citizens Finals, so you can compete for the podium yourself or cheer on your friends as they take on the toughest climbs of their category. After Citizens are crowned, the Pros take the stage—expect a fierce show from people who’ve done this before, competing for the cash purse. A DJ, full bar, vendor village, and food from Rumsy’s will be on to keep you going all night.

Beaster starts in less than two weeks. Head here to register. See you there!
